UPTOWN FUNK
The areas of New York make me think of the characters in a book ? everyone is so different and each of them has its own history, its characteristics, its personality: there’s Soho, the penniless artist who paints in his atelier; Coney is an Eastern hooker- with kitsch and showy dresses- while Tribeca is a widow from the high society; Chelsea is the spoiled daddy’s girl, rich and trendy, and Nolita the actress with sophisticated manners and a slight Italian accent.
Harlem, I picture her as a beautiful African-American girl with a passion for music, old movies, bright colors and vintage clothes, and this is the neighborhood that I want to talk you about today.
Harlem, the black mecca, is a lively, colorful, area in the north of Manhattan – uptown they would say in the city. Despite its tumultuous history – marked by violence and crime – today it is a requlified, multicultural district which I found extremely dynamic and wonderful, full of historic buildings characterized by the typical brownstone that share space with colorful graffitis.
Here, music is a real cult: in facts, it is the part of Manhattan where you can find some temples of black music, such as the Cotton Club (for jazz) or the Apollo Theatre, a former burlesque club later transformed in a famous theatre where Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, the Jackson 5 and Jay-Z among others have performed.
If you decide to go for a walk in Harlem, I recommend you do it on Sunday, like I did: you can attend a real gospel Mass in one of the many churches (there are more than 400!) and then treat yourself with a fabulous brunch at the Red Rooster, a picturesque and trendy restaurant that takes its name from one of the historic speakeasy of the district.
The Red Rooster is a lively, crowded, restaurant full of traditions. The pictures on the walls ? from the ones of famous guests to the portraits in black and white perfectly preserved from the ’60s ? the rugby balls, the vintage signs, old books and pairs of shoes are all shown onto the huge shelves as in an unusual museum dedicated to the history of Harlem. It is a place full of past but yet so modern and contemporary that I really recommend you to visit, because here everything is made to be admired (even the bathrooms!) and taste (food is amazing!) to the sound of small orchestras and blues, jazz, funk and soul singers who perform live to entertain the guests (on my Instagram profile you can find a small excerpt of the fantastic Boncellia, who delighted us with his voice that day).

Soho, l?artista squattrinato che dipinge nel suo atelier; Coney ? una squillo dell?Est – con i suoi abiti kitsch e appariscenti – mentre Tribeca ? una vedova dell?alta societ?; Chelsea ? la classica figlia di pap?, ricca e modaiola, e Nolita l?attrice dai modi sofisticati ed un lieve accento italiano.
Harlem me la immagino come una bellissima ragazza afro-americana con una passione per la musica, i vecchi film, i colori sgargianti e gli abiti vintage, ed ? proprio di questo quartiere che voglio parlarvi oggi.

Nonostante il suo passato burrascoso, segnato dalla violenza e dalla criminalit?, oggi si presenta come un quartiere multiculturale riqualificato ed estremamente dinamico e meraviglioso, pieno di edifici storici caratterizzati dalla tipica pietra brownstone che si contendono lo spazio con coloratissimi graffiti.
Qui la musica ? un vero e proprio culto: ? proprio in quest?angolo di New York che possiamo trovare alcuni templi della musica black, come il Cotton Club (per il jazz) o l?Apollo Theatre, un ex club di burlesque poi adibito a teatro artistico per in cui si sono esibite personalit? del calibro di Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, i Jackson 5 e Jay-Z.
Se decidete di fare un giro per Harlem, vi consiglio di farlo di Domenica, come ho fatto io: potete assistere ad una messa gospel in una delle numerose chiese (ce ne sono pi? di 400!) e poi concedervi un favoloso brunch al Red Rooster, una pittoresco ristorante alla moda che prende il nome da uno degli storici speakeasy (i posti in cui vendevano liquori di contrabbando) del quartiere.
Il Red Rooster ? un locale vivo, affollato, pieno di tradizioni. Le foto alle pareti – da quelle di ospiti famosi ai ritratti in bianco e nero perfettamente conservati di famiglia che popolavano il quartiere negli anni ?60 – i palloni da football, le insegne vintage, vecchi libri e paia di scarpe sono tutti esposti sugli enormi scaffali, come in un atipico museo dedicato alla storia di Harlem. ? un posto cos? pieno di passato ma al tempo stesso cos? moderno e contemporaneo che vi consiglio assolutamente di visitare, perch? qui tutto ? da ammirare (perfino i bagni) e da gustare (il cibo ? davvero ottimo) al suono di piccole orchestrine e cantanti blues, jazz, funky e soul che si esibiscono nelle loro formidabili performance per intrattenere gli ospiti (sul mio profilo di Instagram trovate un piccolo estratto della fantastica Boncelliache ci ha deliziato con la sua voce quel giorno).
This look is my personal interpretation of the 80s ? a trend that will come back this winter – in a funky, clean and modern way – what I would call a perfect Harlem style! The golden palazzo pants are wonderfully kitsch and excessive on their own, so I decided to tone then down with a simple black top with long sleeves and matching vintage belt and earrings. Those who know me know also that black + gold is my favorite color combination, and here you can find another look from fall in these two shades.
In this post I also wanted to introduce you to my new baby, my beloved Marc Jacobs vintage Stam bag, which I found in a shop right here in New York! It’s a little treat I wanted to make myself as a souvenir ? it was love at first sight!

Questo look ? una mia personale rivisitazione degli anni ?80 ? trend che torner? prepotentemente di moda questo inverno ? in una versione contemporanea, metropolitana e ripulita, un po? funky, in perfetto stile Harlem.
I pantaloni dorati leggermente a palazzo sono meravigliosamente eccessivi e kitsch, per quello ho deciso di stemperarli con un semplice top nero a manica lunga e orecchini e cintura vintage ton sur ton. Chi mi conosce sa che oro e nero ? il mio abbinamento di colori preferito, e qui potete trovare un?altra mia proposta autunnale in queste due tonalit?.
In questo post volevo anche presentarvi la mia nuova bimba, la mia adorata Stam bag vintage di Marc Jacobs, che ho scovato proprio in un negozietto qui a New York. ? una piccola follia che ho voluto farmi come souvenir, ? stato amore a prima vista!
